PROGRESS OF TAKAPUNA.
RETIRING MAYOR'S REVIEW. SEVEN YEARS' TERM ENDED. As the present Mayor of Takapuna and all but three of the old members of the council are not seeking re-eloction, the proceedings at last evening's meeting of the council were in the nature of a valedictory. The Mayor, Mr- W. Blomfield, in referring to the position, said he had been associated with the council since its inception in June, 1913. Reviewing the history of the borough, he said the progress made reflected great credit on the council and staff. He hoped the new council would see the necessity for a public library, with a lecture hall, and for making an effort to provide a ground for athletic sports. During the past seven years the council had formulated a drainage scheme which was most valuable, said Mr. Blomfield. He hoped the new council would not cast it aside. The present water supply system was not adequate. The scheme which the council had under consideration should he developed. Electric lighting should be taken in hand, and if possible obtained in co-operation with other boroughs. On the general account iho estimated revenue for the past vear was exceeded by £1687, while the estimated expenditure was exceeded by £4061. The actual excess of expenditure over revenue was £2574.
Mr. Blomfield said further he was sorrv to be leaving municipal life. Ho thanked iiie Dsputy-Mayor, Mr. R. S. H. Bi*s, for his good work for the borough, and also expressed thanks to the other x,embers ol the council.
