MEMORIAL TO SOLDIERS.
GRAMMAR SCHOOL MONUMENT
A DESIGN SELECTED.
A design for the war memorial for the Auckland Boys' Grammar School has been agreed upon by the War Memorial Committee, which considered and adopted the report of the sub-committee appointed to judge the competitive designs. The first prize has been awarded to Prouse and Gummer, architects. Auckland, while Grierson and Aimer, architects, and Mr. G. F. Wilson were awarded second and third place respectively. A stipulation of the competition was that the monument should be completed for £2500, which sum will be subscribed by past and present pupils of the school A considerable sum has already been donated and further subscriptions have been promised. The winning design provides for an octagonal column rising from a base on which will be inscribed the names of the fallen. The sides of the column, representing virtues, soar up through the. symbol of the Cross to a figure personifying the soul of man ever striving upward. Other symbols near the top of the column are the Roman fasces, the mediaeval sword (pointing downward, symbolising peace), and the school badge.
