FORTY PITS FLOODED.
DIRECT ACTION IN FIFE. A. and N.Z. and Reutef. LONDON. April 10. Mr. VV. C. Bridgeman. Parliamentary Secretary to the Eoard of Trade, informed the House of Commons that AQ pits were completely flooded, involving 16,000 workmen. Tt was impossible to forecast how many of these pits would again be workable. The amount of irrecoverable payments made to the coal industry for the five years ended March last, was £14,250,000. and it waa estimated that a further £2.000.000 would be required for outstanding <J aims West Fife strikers last night applied direct action, drawing the fires to prevent pumping. The Blackall colliery police arrived too late, but were in time to previ nt damage to machinery. Military police are now guarding the machinery at most of the collieries.
