CASE UNDER HOUSING ACT. ALLEGED BONUS FROM A plea of not guilty -was entered by Joseph Hooker (Mr. A. Moody), when charged at the Police Court yesterday, [ before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., -with > having stolen £14, the property of Mrs. ( Elizabeth Doyle, and with i having de- > j manded and accepted from Mts. Doylo ' £14 in consideration for having obtained for occupation of certain premises ■ in New North Road. The second charge was made under the provisions of the ; Housing Amendment Act, 1920, which , makes it illegal to accept a bonus from a tenant in consideration for occupation of premises. The offences were alleged to have been committed in connection with the sub-letting of certain premises for I which accused acted as agent. After hearing involved evidence the magistrate said he would give his decision on Friday. YOUTHS ADMIT THEFT. Two youths, aged 19 and 15 respec-. tively, admitted having stolen a quantity of saddlery, valued at £6 10s, from a saddler's shop at Kingsland. Mr. OsborneLilly appeared for the elder boy, and Mr. Fleming for the younger, who was dealt , with in the Juvenile Offenders' Court. Senior-Sergeant Rawle said part of the goods had been recovered from the bed of a creek, but were in an unsaleable condition. The boys had entered the shop and taken the goods away. They had made a statement admitting the offence. They had good characters, but they had ! got into undesirable company. Both accused were admitted to probation for two years, and were each ordered to pay half the value of the stolen saddlery within . six months. SHIP'S STGRES EMBEZZLED. A deck hand on the steamer L&ngton t Hall, Charles Gautier, admitted having > embezzled ship's stores, namely, six tins of condensed milk valued at 6s. the property of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Shipping Company. This and the follow- \ ing cases were heard by Messrs. W. J. i Holdsworth, W. Harkins, and C. W. ■ Greenwood, J.P.'s. It was stated that accußed had given the milk to a friend. Accused said the milk was not stolen. It , had been_ issued to him on the ship. He k was convicted and ordered to pay the cost ■ of the milk. t > MISCELLANEOUS OFFENCES. I For having been found drunk in charge t of a motor-cycle in Remuera Road on Saturday evening William John Duffin, who did not appear, was fined £5. It was stated that accused had been seen attempting to mount his cycle, but was too drunk to do so. Walter Carrick, who admitted having - broken a shop window, valued at £1 15s, J while drunk, was fined £1, and ordered to pay the damage, £1 15s, being allowed a month in which to pay.
