VISITING CRICKETERS.
CANTERBURY DEFEATED. MARGIN OF SEVEN WICKETS. [BT TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION".] CBTTISTCHUECH. Monday. When the- cricket match between Australia and Canterbury was resumed today there seemed every likelihood that it would be drawn, but to-day's play saw the Australian fowlers at the top of! their form, and this, combined with rather weak batting by the Canterbury men, left the visitors winners by seven wickets. The weather was again perfect, and the attendance was very good. Ransford treated the onlookers to » fine display of all-round batting. Sandman beat him once or twice, but after this Ransford made all bowling look easy. Toward the close of the innings, after he had worn the edge off the bowling he ,took some risks and forced the pace. It was an innings full of merit. Canterbury's second innings was a great disappointment, coming after their fine scorce in the" first innings. For the most part the batsmen were beaten by bowling of a class they were not accustomed to. Better bowling, or bowling more difficult than Ironmonger's, has rarely been seen at Lancaster Park. Five of his 6even victims were clean bowled, and in every case they were badly beaten. Blunt at the start batted in very promising style, and looked like repeating his first inning's performance until he got one that swung in sharply just before it pitched and then went straight on. Read played the bowling well, but directly he tried to hit he failed to get properly on to the ball and gave a soft catch. With 58 required to win the Australians commenced after tho tea adjournment with Waddy and Richardson. When 40 was up Blunt took the ball from Sandman, and in his first over gbt Waddy leg before wicket with a straight one. Sandman went on again soon afterwards, and at 48 got Lampard l.b.w. When only four were required Brosnahan dismissed Ratcliffe by a splendid catch on the boundary off Blunt. The visitors took forty minutes to knock up the required runs.
