CHILD LOSES AN EYE.
STRUCK BY A BASIN. FATHER CHARGED WITH ASSAULT. i A. charge of having assaulted his son, Harold Lockwood, so as to cause him actual bodily harm, was preferred against William Richard Lockwood (Mr. A. Moody), in the Police Court yesterday, before Messrs. W. J. Holdsworth, W. Harkins, :ind C. W. Greenwood, J.P's. Joseph Henry Deighton said that as he was passing a house in Wellington Street he heard a shriek, and Mrs. Lockwood rushed up, covered with blood. A two-year-old child in her arms was also covered with blood, and had a wound extending right across the forehead. He took the child to the Auckland Hospital, and returned to the house to tell Mrs. Lockwood she was required there. In the presence of accused he asked her about the accident. She replied that her husband had come home under the influence of drink, and alter a few words had thrown a sugar basin at her. Lockwood admitted he had done so. The child was struck by the basin. Dr. J. F. Moore said the child was suffering from a severe wound in the forehead nnd loss of blood. Examination phowed a severe V-shaped wound in the fdrehead, extending from above the right eve, through Hie left eyebrow and eyelid, and involving the left eye, which had to be removed. The child was now out of danger. Constable Allen said he obtained a •statement from Mrs. Lockwood on the night of the incident. Mr. Moody objected to the statement bemg put in as evidence. The objection was noted. Witness read the statement. Mrs. Lockwood said her husband came home under the influence of drink. He struck her and she retaliated with a poker. He then threw a sugar basin at her. Her son, aged two, came into the doorway at the time, and was struck in the forehead by the basin. Continuing his evidence witness said he asked accused if h e would ! make a statement. Accused said, "No My wife has said enough. It is correct " Accused pleaded not guilty, reserved his defence, and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. Bail was allowed
