THE PRICE OF BACON.
COMPLAINT OF FARMERS.
The Auckland Prices Investigation Tribunal yesterday received a complaint from a branch of the Farmers' Union, alleging that the margin between the price paid for bacon pigs, live weight, and the retail price per lb. of cured bacon, was too great. The complainants asserted th_at pigs brought 5d a lb., live weight, on the trucks, and cured bacon was sold across the counter at from Is 9d and Is lOd, and in some cases as much as 2s a lb. Prior to January the wholesale price of bacon was Is 6d a lb., but last month it dropped to Is a lb. No corresponding fall in the retail price had yet bemi reported. The tribunal is taking stops to test the position.
