ROTORUA TO TAURANGA. METALLED ROAD WANTED. QUESTION OF WOOLLEN MILLS. [bi TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT] TAURANGA; Saturday. A meeting of yepresentativee of various local bodies interested in the proposal for i a metalled road between Rotorua and | Tauranga was held yesterday. The meet-i ing was convened by the Tauranga Har-1 bour Board. The following were present :—Mr. J. D. McLean (Rotorua I Chamber of Commerce), Messrs. H. M. Martin and S. Dixon (Rotorua County Council), Messrs. H. Southey, T. Lock-' head and W. J. Griffin (Tauranga County Council), Messrs. B. Dive, Mayor, and T. Tanner (Tauranga Borough Council), Mr. • A. Montgomery (Te Puke Town Board), and Mr. R. King (chairman of the Tauranga Harbour Board). Mr. King detailed the steps leading up to the conference. He emphasised the need for a good metalled road between Tauranga and Rotorua. He moved : — " (A) This meeting of representatives of the Counties of Rotorua and Tauranga, the Borough of Tauranga, the Te Pane Town District and the Tauranga Harbour District affirms the desirability of the speedy formation of a suitable metalled road connecting the port of tauranga anu the town of Rotorua. (B) That the Government be requested to appoint a commission to secure such evidence as may be deemed necessary to decide the route of such proposed road and to apportion its cost between the respective bodies interested." Mr. Montgomery seconded the motion.. He said that such a road would be of great value. 'The motion was supported by Messrs. Southey, Lockhead, Martin. McLean, Dixon and Griffin, and was carried unanimously. Mr. King was authorised to forward the resolution to the Minister for PublicWorks. He then moved :—" That those present be appointed a committee to further the project for the construction of a metalled road between Rotorua and Tauranga and to assist any commission that may be appointed in securing evidence and furnish all necessary particulars to such commission, and that the Government be asked, in appointing a commission, to entrust it also with the matter of deciding the route for tRe main road from Hamilton through the Bay of Plenty." It was agreed to add to the motion :*— " That the Mayor of Tauranga and the chairmen of the Rotorua and Tauranga Counties, the chairman of the Harbour Board and the chairman of the Te Puke Town Board be on the executive." The motion as altered was carried. It was unanimously agreed that the Government be asked to arrange for the Industries Commission to visit the district as a promise was given some time ago to this effect. The matter of establishing a woollen mill in Tauranga was touched upon and found enthusiastic support. The executive committee set up to deal with the road question was asked to consider the matter and call a meeting of all those interested to consider the establishment of a woollen mill in TaurangaIt was decided that the Itcal authorities at Tauranga and Te Puke be asked to extend an invitation to the Parliamentary party to include those places in their i.->'ir of the East Coast. .
