OBITUARY.
MR R. A. HOULD.
Mr. R. A. Hould, who was well known in Auckland some years ago, died in Wellington on Thursday, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur Withy, of Karori, at the age of 82. Mr. Hould, who was born jn the North of England, was for many years in the Auckland office of the , official assignee in bankruptcy. He was identified throughout his career with the single-tax movement in New Zealand, having founded the Auckland branch of the Anti-Poverty League, now known as the Land Values Leacue. He was a member of the deputation from the .league which met Henry George, of whom he was an ardent follower, on his visit to New Zealand. Mr. Hould was possessed .of a fine literary taste and ability. Besides contributing extensively to the league's journal "and the press, he was the author of a skit.on economic conditions in New Zealand, entitled *' The Wreck of the Earthshire." Mr. Hould is survived by two* married daughters and two sons. 'X
In an appreciation of the late Mr. Hould. Dr. J. Giles, of Auckland, says: — "In his letters, as -well as in conversation, Mr. Hould -was fond of discussing general politics, philosophy, theosophy, spiritualism, and other subjects. I have heard a friend of his speak of him as a man very remarkably saturated with the 'enthusiasm of humanity,' to which I will add my own testimony that he possessed in eminent measure the qualities of geniality, courtesy, courage, simplicity, with the true kindness of heart that {toes to the making of a gentleman and a friend." MR. THOMAS WEBB. The death occurred at Mount Albert on Wednesday of Mr. Thomas Webb, a citizen of the Dominion of many years' standing. Born at Langton, Staffordshire, •England, in 1857, the late Mr. Webb arrived in New Zealand with his father in the ship Parsee jui J 1872. He was enfged in farming at Arapohue, Northern airoa, for a number of years, afterwards removing to Auckland, where he 'was engaged in a number of business enterprises He established the firm of Thomas Webb and Co., Ltd., of which he -was a director up to the time of his death. Mr. Webb was a strong single-tax advocate. He was for many years connected with the Bere«ford Street Congregational Church, and later -with the Mount Albert Methodist Church, in 1883 be married Miss Annie Spry, youngest daughter of the late 'Jantain 'Spry, of the 14th Regiment. Mrs. Webb survives him, with a family of four , daughters and , three sons.
