BORING FOR OIL.
OPERATIONS AT CHERTSEY. The Minister for Mines has informed the Canterbury Petroleum Company that the Government has authorised the payment of a subsidy of £1000 to assist in the boring operations at the company's ■works at Chertsey. The grant has been made on the distinct understanding that no part of such money is to be used by the company in payment of any debts or other expenses incurred before the date of the passing of the grant. The staff at the well has encountered many difficulties since the beginning of the year, the chief obstacle being a pump which had fallen to the bottom of the well through a wire rope breaking. For several months past endeavours have been made to break up this obstacle, and the manager is hopeful to achieve this difficult task at an early date, when boring operations will be again carried out.
