DEVONPORT ROADING.

POLL OF RATEPAYERS TO-DAY.

APPROVAL BY PUBLIC MEETING.

The Devonport Borough Council's proposals borrow £120,000 for roading purposes which will be submitted to a poll of" ratepayers to-day, was considered last evening at a public meeting convened by the Devonport Good Roads Campaign Committee in conjunction with the Borough Council. Mr. R. T. -Michaels presided, and described the roads as they now existed in Devonport, as " a disgrace to any civilised community." The Mayor, Mr. H. S. W. King, in explaining the roading scheme, said the suggested extension of the seawall and the widening of King's and Queen's Parades, to which exception had been taken as an unnecessary expenditure, formed an economical part of the plans, inasmuch as a receptacle would thereby be provided for the spoil that would be dug out m grading the roads. Mr. King also stated that Mr. Massey, as Minister for Finance, had promised to assist the council in obtaining at least sufficient money for work to be started if the loan were approved of by the ratepayers. The loan, he added, would have the effect of reducing the general rate. The meeting unanimously passed a resolution expressing determination to carry the proposal at the poll.
