ATTEMPT TO ESCAPE.
PRISONER ON BREAD AND WATER.
A charge of having attempted to escape from the Mount Eden Gaol was admitted 'by a prisoner, Daniel Minihan, aged 28, who appeared before Mr. J. W. Poynton, S.M., in an open Court held in the gaol on Saturday morning. Evidence was given that the prisoner, after working with a gang in the quarry last Monday, was missing at roll call. He was found in a cavity hidden by a plank and some boulders. The superintendent, Mr. T. Vincent, said the prisoner was at present serving a term of three years < s reformative treatment following three months' hard labour for theft from a ship in February, 1920. He had caused trouble on several occasions, and was a nuisance to the warders. In defence, the prisoner said he attempted to escape, because he was worried about his widowed mother in Liverpool, who was deeply grieved at his wrong-doing. The magistrate imposed a sentence of fourteen | days' bread and water diet.
