SHIPPING CRISIS.
DEMAND FOR HIGHER WAGES.

A crisis is threatened in the merchant service. '" Officers, engineers, stokers, and seamen are urging increased wages, and assert that . shipowners have persistently delayed consideration of their claims. Engineers demand an immediate 50 per cejrL increase, officers demand a 40 per cent, increase, and seamen and firemen have submitted a graded scale, representing from 30 per cent, to 40 per cent, increase. It iB reported that shipowners are aghast at the demands.
