WORK OF THE Y.M.C.A.
WINTER PROGRAMME OPENS. The Y.M.CA. building was thronged by members and visitors on Thursday evening, when a social gathering was held for the double purpose of announcing the winter programme of activities and of bidding farewell to Mr. J. G. Garland, late acting general secretary of the association. Mr. C. J. Tunks was in the chair. Brief speeches were delivered by Mr. A. S. Wilson, general secretary, Mr. H G. Fountain, chairman of boys' work, Mr B. Mabin, director of the intermediate department, and Mr. Herbert Gregory, the physical director. Musical items were contributed by the following. -Miss Eva Sharpe, Stella Mclean, and Messrs. Len. Keven, Tom Harris, L. Little, and T. T. Garland. Messrs L. Elliott and W. S. Dingle acted as accompanists. The. proceedings ware terminated by supper served by the ladies' auxiliary of the association. The dinner, which was held earlier in the evening in honour of Mr. Garland, was largely attended. The toast of the departing " guest was enthusiasticallyhonoured. The directors and residents of the Y.M.C.A. presented Mr. Garland with a parcel of cutlery, and the staff made him a gift of a handsome piece of silverware. ' '■
