Chapman, who has been appointed to represent the Te Puke Town Board vice Mr. R. Lees (resigned), took his seat. • The Chief Health Officer, Wellington, intimated that, in. the event of a recrudescence of the influenza epidemic, in, the dktrict necessitating temporary hospital accommodation, the Defence Department has a large number of tents available for such a purpose. . The district health officer, Auckland, stated- that the whole question of the position of sanitary inspectors and their relations to hospital boards is at present under discussion. The acting matron of the Tauranga Hospital forwarded her report for April, showing that 17 patients had been admitted to the hospital and seven had been discharged. The matron of the Te Puke Maternity Hospital stated that six patients had been admitted during April, and four had been discharged. The Public Trust Office advised that the board's application for a loan of £7000 cannot be further considered, as the Solicitor-General advises that the Public Trustee has no power in the existing state of the law to lend to 'hospital boards. It was pointed out, however, that if the contributory local bodies make application to the Public Trustee for a loan to pay their sha:e of the levy made by the board, and offer as security a special rate properly secured, then the Public Trustee will be prepared to consider such application. The board decided to defer action. In the meantime, the tenders received for the nurses' home, Tauranga, and additions to the Te Puke Maternity Hospital cannot be accepted. It was decided that a levy of one-fifth of a penny in the £ on the capital value be made on the contributory bodies. I It was resolved that the Department be asked if the Tauranga and Te Puke Hospitals can be made training schools if arrangements for lectures are made with doctors.
