GROWTH OF THE BUSINESS.
Mr. A. C. Caughey and Mr. Willirn Astley will leave by the Niagara this wfrik on a visit to Great Britain. Mr. Caijghey, who will be accompanied by Mrs. Ca"ghey, Miss Caughey, and his two youngest sons, will combine business with pleasure. At a farewell gathering, promoted by the directors and staff, Mr. Caughey made' interesting reference to the history of the well-known business of Smith and Caughey, Ltd. The speaker said that 56 years and two months ago he left his natives village for Belfast, there to be an apprentice to the soft goods trade. Since that time h? had fcsen closely connected with the drapery business in all its branches. In Auckland 38 years ago he joined his brother-in-law. the late- Mr. W. H. Smith, in a small Upper Queen Street shop, i-he staff being a milliner and two apprentices. To-day the firm's Queen Street premises, apart from its outside factories, occupied over three acres of floor space, and the staff of three had baen multiplied mueh. over a hundred fold, while the wages sheet had developed accordingly.
