FRIENDLY SOCIETIES.
UNITED CONFERENCE. The annual meeting of the Auckland United Friendly Societies' Conference, which was held this week, was well attended by delegates from the Auckland friendly societies. The following, were elected officers President, Bro. W. De.-n ; vice-president, Bro. W. McMillan; hon. secretary, Bro. John McLtod; auditors, Bros. T. Blong and C. C. Joynt.
It was decided to bring under the notice of the Government the disabilities to which members of friendly societies living in remote parts of the Dominion are subjected through the National Provident Fund Board refusing to pay the maternity allowance unless a duly-qualified medical practitioner or registered mid wife or nurse is ir attendance at the birth. It was stated that there are parts of the provincial district of Auckland where doctors or nurses are not available, and where, if available, their services are beyond the means of many deserving people. It was mentioned as an anomaly that the maternity allowance is payable in tho case of a still born child when a duly-qualified medical practitioner is in attendant
The conference also resolved to the Government to increase the remuneration granted to secretaries of friendly societies branches fur furnishing the returns required by the Friendly ""Societies' Department. It was reported that the sum of £12 had accumulated from the surplus of the fund by which the portrait of the late Mr. Kcdilon was purchased for the Memorial Technical College. It was decided to hand the amount to the director of the college. Mr. George George, with the suggestion that, at his discretion, it be devoted toward providing prize-- for an essay on the life of Mr. Seddon.
