DEATH FOLLOWS BURNS.
METROPOLITAN HOTEL FIRE.
INJURED MAN SUCCUMBS.
The injuries received by Mr. John Osburn in the tire at the Metropolitan Hotel on Thursday morning terminated fatally yesterday. Mr. Osburn, who was third cook at the hotel, was severely burned about the head, hands, feet, and shoulders while escaping from the top floor. Apparently he was the last to KWaken after the alarm was given, and he dashed through the fire to a window fronting Queen Street. With clothes aflame, ho reached the fire-escape, where he collapsed, with his feet caught in the ironwork. Freeing himself, he fell to the verandah, 10ft below. He was immediately conveyed to the Auckland Hospital, where he died yesterday morning. His parents reside at Penrith, New South Wales. The inquest was opened yesterday for identification of the body, and adjourned sine die.
