EFFECT UPON AUCKLAND.
;:■•'•'; ~ KQ GOAL/ SllsU«k j,' OF STOCKS, TWO MINES CLOSE DOWN, . TAUPIRI 'AND PUKEMIRO. The coal supplies for Auckland will be seriously affected as the result of the railstrike. Yesterday the Taupiri mines and the Pukemiro collieries, which are dependent. ~on the railways for the transport of their coal, had to close down. This means that Auckland'from these mines alone ..will lose 63) tonu per day. The Taupiri mines put out about 1000 tons a day, half of which is used in Auckland and suburbs. About 400 tons are obtained daily from the Pukemiro collieries, 120 tons of which an., sent here. In consequence of the. strike coal cannot be obtained from these sources. To give an idea as to what tirese two mines mean in railway traffic, be mentioned that the average capacity of a truck is approximately sis tons. Therefore it would take 233 trucks to distribute m j tie 1400 tons hewn daily. This would make up sir lengthy trains. A member of a prominent firm of coal merbhhnts stated yesterday ihat stocks of coal in Auckland at present were very short. There were small quantities in sight fro»T. Newcastle, bat these would not meet the demand, and the position was becoming serious.
