THE AUCKLAND A.S.R.S.

YESTERDAY'S MEETINGS.

STRIKE DECISION COMES LATER.

Speculation as to what action the men engaged in the workshops and the traffic and maintenance branches of the railway service would* take, formed the subject of excited discussion in Auckland yesterday. The men belong to the Amalgamated Society orßaiiway Servants, which has a membership of about 8000, a considerably laj'gar- number than either of the other two railway unions. The society is governed by an executive council of nine members, consisting of four- representatives from each island, with- the president-, Mr. J. Hampton, of Christchurch. Immediately the decision of the Enginedrivers, Firemen, and Cleaners' Association to strike at midnight on Tuesday was announced, the members of the exacntive were summoned to Wellington. Two 1 Auckland representatives. Messrs. R. Moore and F. Carr, received their telegrams too late to enable them to travel by the Main Trunk express that evening, and therefore the meeting will have to go on without them. However, a third Auckland delegate, who resides at Tauniamnui, succeeded in catching the train. Stop-work meetings of the Auckland and Newmarket branches of the- society were held yesterday morning to -consider the position. The men were not aware of the fact that i strike had been called, as 1 advice to tb '.< eL-ec* reached Auckland late last e*«nin".
