SOUTH AFRICAN PARTIES

COMING TRIAL OF STRENGTH.

ANTI-PROFITEERING BILL.

Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.

(Reed. 7.30 pm.)

CAPETOWN, April 27.

A crisis is threatened over the Government Anti-Profiteering Bill. Besides the Labour amendment, an amendment has been moved on behalf of the Nationalist Party, asking that the Bill be discharged and referred to a Select Committee. General Smuts is determined that the Bill shall go to a second reading, after which he is willing to refer it to a Select Committee. The Nationalists and Labour Party are determined to press their amendment*. The party groups are so evenly divided that the issue is doubtful. The Government's hope is that the Labour amendment is unlikely to find any support outside the Labour ranks.
