PAPER FROM CANADA.

NO EMBARGO ON EXPORT

SHORTAGE STILL ACUTE. Router. , OTTAWA, Jan. 5. An official denial is given to the report that the Government contemplated entirely prohibiting the export of newsprint paper. The Canadian newspapers use 20 per cent, of the output, and the remaining 80 per Cent, must be exported or the | industry will close down. The Gov- j ernment's only object in interfering I is to see that the Canadian papers j get fair supplies as a first call. They i will not interfere with the balance, i There is reason to believe that the j Pacific Coast mills will continue , supplying Australia and New Zea- J land this year substantially on the i same basis as last year, but pub- j lishers everywhere realise that j prices are rising with the acute j scarcity, and all stocks have been I wiped out, even the richest news-1 papers having to be content with ! hand to mouth supplies. Certainly I there is no hope of Australia and j New Zealand getting more paper! than they have been receiving from 1 Canada. 1
