POINT CHEVALIER SCHOOL.
NEW INFANT DEPARTMENT.
[ The new infant department of the Point Chevalier School -was opened yesterday afternoon, the ceremony being performed by Mr. G. W. Murray, representing the chairman of the Education Board. The hoard was further represented by Mr. H. S. W. King, a member, and Mr. E. K. Mulgan, /senior inspector. The ceremony was alsb attended by Mr. C. J. Parr, member for the district, and Mr. Wesley Spragg. The guests were welcomed by the chairman of the Point Chevalier School Committee, a number of residents of the district also being present. In declaring the new department open, Mr. Murray congratulated the Point CheValier people upon the acquisition of so handsomn and useful a building. He specially called attention to the motto of the school, "Learn, that ye may better serve," emphasising the value of school training as the basis for lives of usefulness and service to the community. Speeches were also made by Messrs. King, Mulgan. and Parr. Following the formal opening of the school an excellent exhibition of diving and swimming was given in the school baths.
The new department, which is built in brick, contains four rooms, with accommodation for 220 children, and was erected at a cost of £3482. Special attention has been paid to the requirements of the small pupils, and the ventilation and lighting arrangements are excellent.
