PARENTS AND TEACHERS.

. NEEDS OF THE CHILDREN. SCHOOL COMMITTEE GRANTS. Two addresses on education matters were given before a special meeting of the Auckland Primary School Committees' Association "last evening. Mr. C. H. Fumess presided. Mr. E. C. Purdie, secretary to the Auckland Board, dealt with a number of matters, including the grants to school ; committees under the new Act. He showed that these were quite inadequate to meet the necessities of the committees. He also pointed out the basis upon which additions to the payments to teachers were to be made, stating that this was to be on a grading increment, instead of an increment determined by position. Mr. Purdie remarked that this would seem to indicate an intention.of adopting this principle in any new Act that might be framed. In order to encourage teachers to take up country work a special rural increment had been introduced. He also dealt with a number of regulations and their administration. ■ Mr. H. S. W. King, a member of the Education Board, spoke on the proposed establishment of parent-teachers' associations. He said that as the State depended upon the children for its future men and women, it became essential that ! parents and teachers should work together for the betterment of the children [ The initiation of such associations was a ( matter which the school committees could . very well undertake, since they could i most effectually bring about harmonious - relations between parents and teachers. Each speaker received a vote of thanks. ————•■._____
