McLean, mentioned that the day marked the 46th anniversary of the club. It was the oldest club in Auckland, and he wag proud of tie record the members had established in going on active service. The roll of honour contained the names of 130 past and present members who had ail volunteered. Among the honours gained at the war were two D.S.O.'S, two M.C.'s, two D.C.M.'s and on© bar. and two M.M.'s. One member, Ben Rutledge, was a member of the champion New Zealand eight-oar crew that won the inter-Allied race on the Seine and also at Marlow-on-Thames. ] Mr. E. Burgess, one of the pioneers of I rowing in Auckland, also extended a welcome 1 to the visitors. j ,The Mayor of Devonport, Mr. H. W. S. j King, wished the club'a successful season. It could always rely upon his support. | The trophies for the trial fours were donated by the president. Mr. D. W. McLean. Nine crews competed, and very good racing .resulted. The No. 1 course, from Victoria Wharf to Devonport Wharf, was used, but in the early portion of the afternoon. owing to the westerly wind, the water conditions were not of the best. The officials for the day were': Judges, Messrs. McLean and B. B. Skellon; starter. Mr. R. Harvey. Crews stroked by Mcllwraith, Fraser, and Follas met in the first heat and were on even terms until seven-eights of tlfe course was covered. Mcllwraith spurted and shot into the lead, which was maintained until the finishing line was crossed half a length to the good. Bennett, Rutledge, and Harvey stroked the crews in the second heat. Bennett's four .went into the lead at the start, and towing well gained the verdict by a length from Rutledge, with Harvey a. length away third. Harvey replaced Bailey, and. met crews sroked by Barrett and Spmley in the third heat. The crews remained together until half the distance was covered. Harvey then forged ahead and won by over a length. A splendid spurt by Spinley enabled him to overhaul Barrett and gain second place. The final was the race of the day. The crews were: Mcllwraith, Alexander, Emerali, Faulkner; Harvey, Fairgray, Curlett, W. Faulkner; Bennett, Baxter, Kissell, A. j Bailey. Tuo crews struck the water together on the fall of the flag, and remained on even terms to Ventnor- McIlwraith's crew, responding to a call, then l gained half a length's lead. Both Bennett I and Harvey closed the gap, but whet off

the old ferry yards Bennett's chances were spoiled through an oar breaking. Again Harvey spurted, and off the clubhouse- wes on even terms with his opponents. _ A desperate finish ensued, Harvey crossing the line first by a very narrow margin. WEST END CLUB. The West End Club held trial fours on Saturday afternoon for trophies presented by Mr. A. E. Collins. Splendid water conditions prevailed, and the lengthened course from the tide-deflector to Shelly Beach produced much better racing. Mr. J. Carder acted as starter, while the president, Mr. J. Clark, was judge.

In the first heat crejys stroked by Dawes, Trevarthen and J. Bigelow faced the starter. Bigelow's four jumped away at the commencement, but Da,wea came with a determined challenge and gained the lead.' At the boathouse Dawes was well clear • of the others, but earing the finishing-line Bigelow —without avail—Dawes winning by two lengths from JBigelow, with Trevarthen, a length away, third. Cole. Culpan and Hunter wore the strokes in the second heat. It was a good race to half-way. Then Cole spurted and gained a half-length's lead, which he maintained to the finish, with Culpan second and Hunter third. The third hesvt was contested by crews stroked by Vorran, Ogilvy and Hamilton. There was ft close run for the first quarter, then Verran shot ahead. Ogilvy spurted ana drew level, only to find Verran. again draw away to a canvas advantage. Close on the post- Ogilvy again spurted, but failed to reduce the gap, Verran winning by a canvas, with Hamilton third, a length away. Ryan, A. Jerrom, and H. Beamish stroked the crews in the fourth heat. This was a close race throughout, and resulted in a win for Ryan, with Beamish and Jerrom a dead heat for second place. In the semi-finals two fine races resulted. In tho first heat Dawes and Cole had a des- | perate struggle throughout. Cole, at be start, gained a slight lead, which he held until near the finishing-line. Here Dawes' crew overhauled him, and gained the verdict by 2ft. * Ryan gained the best of the start in the second heat, and soon held a length s lead. His club-mate made repeated efforts to r«r duce the gap. but failed, and Ryan qualified for the final by a length's win. The crews in the final were:— Dawes, S. Hunt, T. Virtue, J. Hackle, T. Ryan, E. Williams, ('. Wheeler. G.' Whitcombe. The crews lumped off to a tine start, and tei a. very lively pace. The fortunes fluctuated until the last few lengths of the Journey. Kyan was then just ahead, and although Dawes made a- splendid effort he failed to decrease the gap, and Ryan s four won by & bare canvas. AUCKLAND CLUB. The Auckland Club made a change in its club races, and spent the afternoon with the pair oars, to decide possession of trie trophies presented by Mr. George Hogan, an old member of the. club The water was somewhat choppy owing to the westerly wind, vet despite such a handicap, some good racing was witnessed. The club commodore, Mr. H. Cleal. acted as starter, and Mr. O. Andrewc-s was judge. In the first heat Stevenson and Lawson. Lovett and West, Hawea and 01 sen met, and i a win by a canvas-length was gained by the 1 first-named pair. > V. Murray and E. Morgan, Benjamin and J Brodie. V. Pearson and 3. I ROYAL N.Z. YACHT SQUADRON. HARBOUR RACE. , The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron neld its first harbour racc of th<" season on Saturday afternoon. The weather condition* were all that could be desired, a nice topsail breeze from the west prevailing throughout the afternoon. The race, which was sailed over the squadron s usual harbour course, was started at-'-0.40 p.m., and brought out the following competitors: Rawene, Victory. i£oana, Waione. Ngatira. Thistle, and Windward. .Rawene got the best of the start, crossina: the line well clear of the other boats Next came r.gatira, Waione. Moana, Victory Ihistle and Windward in the order named. iiawene was first to set her spinnaker and drew away from her opponents. Approaching the first mark Moana closed up on Rawene and there was very little between taem when luffing round the mark. On the lead to the Rangitoto Channel mark Rawene improved her position, while Victory also closed up on Moana. The times rounding this mark were Rawene, oh 5Sm 225; Moar.a, Sh 39m 595: Victory. 3h 40m: Waione, 3h 40m 40s; Isgatira. 5h 41m 555: Thistle. 3h'43m 225; Windward, 3h 44m 275. Victory and Moana were now making a very close race of it, and when the Bastion was reached on the return trim from Rangitoto Chacney, Victory had replaced Moana. The times rounding this mark were:—Rawene. 5h 59m 455: Victory. ' 4h ljn 30s: Moana. 4h lm 455: Waione, 4h I3m ' Ngatira. 4h 4m 10s: Thistle. 4h 7m 20': Windward. 4h 8m 40s. On the beat un the harbour to the mark boat off King's Wharf, Rawene increased her lead. Moana and Victory were still, having a great tussle and every move was watched With great interest bv , the spectators on King Wharf. Moana picked up on Victorv arid for a time the boats were almost on level terms with one another. Off Mechanics' Bay Victory crossed Moana's bow and threw right round on the letter's weather. Moana. however eraduallv crept through Victory's lee and got her wind clear and again drew ahead. Meanwhile Waione. which was having a .. good race with Ngatira. took in her topsail and led Ngatira up the harbour. Some distance astern of these two came Thistle and Windward in that order. Just before reaching the top mark Victory got a nice-luff and went about, which enabled' her- to -beat Moana round the mark by four seconds. Waione reset her topsail approaching the top mark. This she overstood and was beaten round by Ngatira by eight seconds. The times of the boats completing the first roun<J, were: Rawene, 4h 27m 40s;"Victory, 4h 29m 455: Moana, 4h 29m 595; Ngatira. 4h 35m 355: Waione. 4h 35m 435: Thistle. 4h 39m 368; Windward. 4h 44m 355. Spinnakers were again set for the run down to' th» Bastion mark. Victory's crew were very smart in setting their spinnaker and had it drawing before Rawene. The crew of the Moana also did some smart spinnaker work. Moana headed Victory before reaching t-ht Bastion and Windward gave up shortly after rounding the top .mark. Moana was about half a minute ahead of Victory when th>;v rounded the Bastion mark for the lead to the channel beacon. Rawene was still in the lead _ and Waione was ahead of Ngatira with Thistle last. The same positions were maintained on returning from the channel, the times rounding the Bastion for th« beat home being:—Rawene. Sh 40m 10s: Moana. 5h 43m 50s: Victory. 5h 43m 58s: Waione. 5h 57m 10s: Ngatira. 5h 51m 30s: Thistle, oh 57m 20s. After getting round this mark the -b"»ts worked the southern shore as the tfde had now turned. B-awene continued her. lead and Victory gradually closed up on Moana. these two boats again having a "neck and neck" race on the beat up the harbour.
