A record of over 58 years' service fa the employment of an Auckland firm is he'd by Mr. Alexander Smith/ who ha* seen compelled by' ill-health, following lpon an attack of influenza last Novemoer, ;o resign from the staff of J. F. Leighton ind Son, Limited. Mr. Smith was born n Auckland in 1849, his parents having irrived by the ship Duchess of Argyle in L 842, He entered the employ of Mr. J. F. Leighton in 1860, and remained with be firm until recently. As a memento of lis _ long service, he was presented with in illuminated address, in which reference s made to his ability and integrity. Mr. Smith was a well-known reciter, and frepient'y appeared on the concert platform 10 years ago. Mr.' and Mrs. Smith will «lebrate their golden wedding this month. THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY. * « . DANISH OFFICIAL'S ADVICE. Referring to the dairying industry in an nterview in Christchurch, Mr. R. Kampp, )flicial agricultural adviser to the Danish Government, ( who is touring the Doninion, said he thought it would be as veil if the New Zealand dairy farmer paid nore attention to the problem of winter miking, so that work could go on all the rear round. In Denmark milking went m all the time, but there, of course, cows vere stabled and hand-fed with roots and >ther fodder. Dairying in Denmark was nore of the intensive kind, while,in .New Zealand it was extensive—his country was i land of small holdings. The farms n Denmark ranged from about one acre to jO acres. A man could make a living lor limself and his family from 10 acres with dairying, pig feeding, and poultry raising-.
