WHAKATANE RIVER LIMITS.

• ♦ . REQUEST FOR EXTENSION, MINISTER SYMPATHETIC. [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAUEA.NGA, Thursday. A deputation waited on the Hon. W. H. Herries this morning, and urged the extension of the river limits from Whasatane to Whnngamata, including Slipper Mayor, Motitt, Alderman. Whale, ;uid Rnrima Island?. It was pointed out that local launch-owners were prevented by the restricted limits from trading with neighbouring islands and from running to wellknown bapuka and kingfishing grounds. The present limits affected local traders and launch-owners, and prevented visitors and others from enjoying the benefits of deep-sea fishing. Speakers also emphasised the fact that there would be no risk to launches in extending the limits, as good shelter could be obtained at the various islands. Mr. Herries in reply, said he thought the extension ought to.be granted, unless the Department's naval advisers reported that there was a danger in acceding to the reauest. The deputation's arguments were reasonable, and as Minister for Marine he would look into the whole question on his return to Wellington.
