TRAMWAYMEN'S WAGES.

CONFERENCE IN WELLINgIoN. GROUPING SYSTEM PROPOSED. [by TELEGRAPH. PRESS association-.] WELLINGTON. Thursday. The conference of representatives of municipal authorities and private companies controlling tramways in New Zealand was concluded this morning, and a set of counter-proposals was draw n up for submission to the Tramwaymens' Federation. A joint conference was held in the afternoon between the controlling authorities and representatives of the tramwaymen's Federation. The Mayor of Wellington, Mr. J. P. Luke, MP., was appointed chairman. Proposals submitted by the men's representatives provided for the grouping of the Dominion into three parts, comprising, first, Christchurch, Dunedin, Invercargui, and New Plymouth ; second, Auckland and Wanganui; third, Wellington. The object of the grouping system was to determine the rates of pay proportionatelv to the cost of living in the various centres, as well as to meet the varying conditions in the conduct of the tramway services.
