APPOINTMENT OF DOCTOR.

«otrouble ARISES at fiji. 'residents AND GOVERNOR. [from our OWN CORRESPONDENT.] j SUVA, FIJI, Nov. 18. i The Governor nominated an " unknown quantity " in East Africa a? chief medical ■ officer, overlooking the claims of Dr. i Montague, the acting chief medical officer, ' who has been 20 years in the Pacific, is i eminently popular, and has proved himself most thoroughly efficient in every . way. Immediately the colony was up in arms, ■ and a petition was signed not only by '90 per cent, of the Europeans, but also ! by the heads of the great Methodist and Roman Catholic Missions, representing 80,000 natives. Every doctor in the group presented a petition on his own account. The Governor, instead of cabling the text of the petition to the Secretary of State, supplemented it by reiterating his desire to see his friend appointed. This added to the trouble, and last night a large public meeting unanimously passed a motion protesting against the action oi the Governor. A long cable was sent to-day to the Secretary of State protesting against the . appointment.
