AUCKLAND SCHOOLS.

The Auckland Education Board is to be congratulated upon the foresight which has placed a substantial sura at its disposal for the rebuilding of obsolete schools. The principal difficulty the board is likely to experience is knowing where to begin when so much is to be done. Of 60 schools in the Auckland district recently tabulated only 16 have more than 12 square feet of floor space per pupil, 24 more than 10 square feet, while 20 have less than 10 square feet. Considering the main schools apart from the infant departments, and allowing for probable increases in attendance, it appeared that only 12 schools out of r,<) conform to modern standards of accommodation, 20 are on the border, and 28 are grossly overcrowded. The board is therefore faced with a very expensive building programme, and it has wisely decided that there should be no further delay in making a start. The Government has made generous provision for school construction during the next few years, and this fact should influence the board to grapple with the worst cases of overcrowding immediately.
