■ ♦ takapuna JOCKEY club. spring; meeting concluded WAIUTA brings OFF SURPRISE. With a stiff westerly wind- blowing, and an overcast sty in evidence it seemed as though the concluding day of the Takapuna Jockey Club's Spring Meeting held yesterday would be greatly marred; but, though occasional showers fell, such never took a pronounced form; and at various stages of the day the sun came out quite brightly. There was again, a large attendance; and with, a healthy tone pervading the racing throughout, the gathering passed off most pleasantly. The secretary, Mr. R. Wynyard, managed the gathering well; and the starter. Mr. C. O'Connor, discharged his difficult task with accustomed success. The musical portion of the programme was rendered by Burnnand's Orchestral Band, and the selections played on the lawn added much to the enjoyment of those present. The stewards were summoned after the St. Andrews Handicap contest to consider a question of interference in which Bedford sufiered. After hearing evidence on the matter a fine of £5 was imposed on Downing, the rider of Fabriquette. and he was also censured. In the Welter Handicap, Gold Kip met with some interference; and this formed the subject of another inquiry at the hands of the stewards. M. D. O'Shea. the rider of Scottish Knight, was considered to have transgressed, and he was censured accordingly. .Mr. A. W. Gordon was the stipendiary steward on duty. Speculation was again characterised with much spirit, the sum of £50.531 10s being passed through the totalisator in the eight events which formed the programme. Added to the sum (£56,1441, put through on the opening day, this gave a grand total of £106,675 10s for the meeting. Compared with the receipts associated with the spring meeting of 1916. which extended over a similar number of days, this year's investments represent an increase of £52.486 10s. In a field of nine saddled up to contest the Stanley Hurdle Race, the top-weight, Notability, was made favourite; but he was never in a position to flatter the hopes of bis admirers. At trie home turn it seemed pretty even between Battletide and Te Toa, but the latter faded away, and Battletide won comfortably at the end. The Cautley Handicap brought out 13 contestants, with Simonides favourite. Mr. O'Connor experienced a deal of difficulty in getting the field to line up properly in the teeth of the stiff westerly wind, but when the barrier went up the start was a good one. The favouritism displayed for Simonides proved to be well justified, for the good-looking son of Demosthenes was in command at the head of the straight, and won his race in easy style. The strong field of 30 was produced to contest the Vauxhall Handicap, and with the issue extremely well concealed a very keen interest, was manifested in the result. At the close of speculation Generalissimo was found ruling favourite, with Valley Queen. Miss I*slie, and Scjap <»' Paper next in demand. Generalissimo never succeeded in getting into the lead, and in a good finish Scrap o' Paper won by a neck from Salvaless, who ranked as an outsider. Forward Lady and Gold Plane fell. MrCurdy, the rider of the first-named horse, escaped without injury, but McCormack, who had the mount on Gold Plane, suffered a severe shaking. The St. Andrew's Handicap brought out a. dozen contestants, and despite the fact of Tinopai being called upon to carry 9st slh the Stepniak mare always stood out favourite. Lord Kenilworth. Mullingar, and E,-\briquetto being the others most strongly backed. The favourites had all to strike their colours. Lord Kenilworth flattered the hopes of his admirers early, and he held full command for over half a mile. Waiuta had the Australian horse well beaten two furlongs from home, and the Carl Rosa m&re staying it out well, she won her race nicely by a length and a-half from Mullingar. With only a trio of contestants for the Kakino Handicap, the two-year-old race did not command a large amount of interest. landslide was made favourite, and he made n game bid for victory; but 'Lovelight. who had 371b the best of the weights, beat his Australian rival by a short half length after a good race. The Pnpuke Handicap attracted the good field of 19, Persian King, General Advance, and Tama-a-roa forming the favourite division. After Admiral Advance had carried the field along to the straight Persian King challenged, and he won his race in good style by three-quarters of a length. The field for the Kawau Hurdle Race was reduced to five, and when backers got to work they made Movement favourite. The daughter of Advance dashed to the front early, and she carried the field along at a slashing pace. Marconi was a stiff thorn m the side of the favourite all the way up the straight, but the Taranaki mare hung on most gamely to her task, and amid excitement she got home first by a head. The concluding event of the programme was the Welter Hndicap, which brought out nine contestants. Despite the fact of Simonides being cast in a 711) penalty, which brought his impost to lOst 31b, he always ruled a strong favourite. The son of Demosthenes fulfilled all demands, forging to the front two furlongs from home, and winning his race in attractive style.
