GRAMMAR SCHOOL BOARD.
♦ SCHOOL BOARDINGHOUSES. APPOINTMENT OF TEACHERS. A meeting of the Grammar Schoo Boa.rd of Governors was held yesterda; afternoon, the following members bem< present: — Professor A. P. W. Thomas chairman. Mrs. F. K. Baume. Messrs. Ci \\". Murray, J. Stanton, W. A. dimming the Hon. G. J. Garland, and Dr. J. S Reekie. The report of the. Property Oommitte< stated that the portion ol t.he grounds a th back of the. Boys' Grammar Schoo set apart for the purpose of a hostel hac been approved bv the director of educa tion, while the site for the girls' boarding house at Epsom had also been approved This prompted a question from Mrs Baume as to the exact position with re -and to the school boarding-houses. fc*< had been under the impression that th< i project had been "turned down by the ; Department. The chairman replied thai i l>i. Anderson was in favour of the erec I tion of the hostels, but when the boaro I would get the money for them was an I i.tlier matter altogether. The plans hac : been sent to Wellington for consideration bv heads of the Department, who thought the cost too high in some respects. II modified, the director would be in i'avoin of making a grant. All applications foi giant.-, however, had been postponed for the present ; it was entirely a matter ol how far the money available would go in i regard to a very large number of de- ! mands. | Some discussion took place upon the , point as to whether two assistants posi- , tioiis at the Boys' Grammar School, for I which the headmaster had recommended 1 two ex-pupils who had just completed ' their university course, should be advertised. Mr. G. W. Murray moved that these applicants should be appointed. The position, he said, was akin to that under which probationers were appointed at the public schools. The Hon. G. J. Carland objected to this course, holding that the ordinary probationers' conditions ' did not apply at the Grammar School, i The positions should be advertised in the ' customary way. and he moved an amend- ! ment accordingly. Other members took ; the view that the case was not analagous to that of ordinary teachers' appoint--1 ments. The applicants had been highly recommended by the headmaster, said! I Professor Thomas, and the board would probably lose two valuable teachers if his | recommendation were not adopted. The i amendment to the motion requiring that I the positions be advertised was lost, only I the mover voting for it. ! The resignations of Mies D. M. Little, domestic science mistress, and Miss V.' N'ntsford, assistant mistress, Howe Street Girls' School, and Miss Mary McLean, Epsom school, were received with regret! ■Miss Louise Forbes was appointed French mistress at th e Epsom school. The inspector's report on the three schools was adopted, members expressing > gratification at the progress Recorded °
