MAINTENANCE OF SCHOOLS.
—«. . INADEQUACY* OF GRANTS. INSUFFICIENT INCREASES. The inadequacy of the present provision by the Government {or the making of grants to school committees for the payment of incidental expenses was referred to at the meeting of the Auckland Education Board last evening. The secretary to the board. Mr. E. C. Purdie, said the various boards had unanimously decided that in order that the financial needs of the committees of the Dominion could be reasonably met the ~ n for grants, which last year was i-bI.VUU, should be increased by £23 000 ' making a total of £90,000. The officers of the Department, however, advised the . Minister that an increase of £6000 would . meet requirements. This sum was voted in the schedule to the Bill introduced during the late session. The representatives of the various boards then met the members of Parliament and placed the position before them. The outcome wa< that a further vote of £5000 was placed upon the Supplementary Estimates, making a total increase of £11,000, or less than halt the additional amount that had boen asked for. Mr. Purdie said the Auckland I board last year had supplemented the ' ¥?n™ to^u ts comm ittees to the extent of | i-4UUU. lhis year, however, the board's income had been diminished bv £2500. and it would not be in a position to ; again grant this assistance. The chairman, Mr. E. C. Banks, endorsed the remarks made by Mr. Purdie. it was decided to defer action in regard to a particular application from a commit- ; tee for assistance that came before the ; board, until a comparison can be made ' between the old and new scales of grants.
