CRITICAL STATE OF EGYPT.
SITUATION ALARMING. ARREST OF AGITATORS. REFUSAL TO CURB ACTIVITY. Bv Telegraph— Press Association—Copyright. (Received 9.-15 p.m.) Renter. LONDON, Nov. 21. The Egyptian situation is alarming.. Lord Allcnby ordered three of the Zaghbul leaders to cease their ! agitation, and two to leave Cairo. All refused, and were arrested. The name of Zaghlul is apparently applied to the movement fostered by I Zaghlul Pasha, one of the nationalist I leaders deported in March in consequence I of their activity in fostering anti-British ] agitation. A sketch of his career a.nd characteristics published at that time [ stated:—Said Pasha zaghlul. the leader of ; the Nationalists in the Legislative Assem- , bly, has recently carried on a campaign I on extreme lines, and had been warned in [ January by General Watson against any attempt to- preach disloyalty to the Protecting Power. Zaghlul was in 1206 apj pointed Minister for Public Instruction, and visited London in the summer of 1907. Zaghlul, who is a typical fellah product of Kl Azhar (the Moslem University of Cairo), became later Minister for Justice but his reactionary tendencies led to trouble, and, j under pressure from Lord Kitchener, he ' was forced to resign. ZaghJul was elected j one of the Cairo members of the Legis--1 lative Assembly in 1.913, and became one lof its Vice-Presidents. Eloquent and i capable, he was also fanatical and stub- ! born. He showed his " Nationalism," when Minister for Education, by substituting Arabic for hntrlish as the medium of instruction in scientific subjects.
