POLICE CARNIVAL.

The Police Carnival, in aid of tho St. John Ambulance Fund, was concluded last evening at the Town Hall. A large audience was present. The Auckland Garrison Artillery Band played selections throughout the evening, wh'ch added greatly to the enjoyment of the entertainment. In tho tug-of-war semi-finals, Suburbs beat Epsom, and Southdown beat Auckland Tramways. The latter pull was very efen, and was one of the finest contests ever seep in Auckland. No doubt tho strain imposed upon the Southdown team when gaining their pulls- over Tramways, weakened them to a certain extent, so that when they met Suburbs in the final the latter team had- a fairly easy win. The Suburbs team were, therefore, the winners of the first prize of £35, and the Southdown team were the runners-up, and received '£15. An interesting display of jiujitsu was given by members of the Auckland Police Force, under Senior-Sergeant J. McNaraara. An exhibition of exceptional interest was given by Jack Crawford, an Auck'and boy A challenge was offered by him to any man in New Zealand to perform the treble feat of escaping from a straight-jacket, a ! * parr of handcuffs, and a set of stra-os in" : less time than he took. In the exhibition • last night he was securely fastened by members of the police force, and in full view of the audience he extricated himself in lm 455. The middle-weight wrestling championship between Fulton and Thompson was won by Fulton. The single-pull tug-of-war final between Strange (Auckland Tramways) and Hotham (Suburbs) resulted in a win for the former. • A pleasing feature of the evening' was a High'and fling and Irish jig by the Misses Campbell. A unique boxing exhibition was provided by the midgets, Barry and Fletcher. A skippiug-rope dance by Miss , Rosa Sachs was greatly appreciated, and Mies Gwynne De Anbney ga:ned prolonged applause with her songs. As a result of the sale of tickets by the members of the police force, a col'ection, and the carnival, it is hoped to realise about £400 for the" I funds of the Ambulance Association.
