SITE FOR UNIVERSITY.
METROPOLITAN GROUND. SMALL PORTION OF AREA. GRANT PROVIDED FOR DING. [BY TELEGRAPH. —SPECIAL REPORTER.] WELLINGTON. Thursday. The Auckland University College Site Bill was introduced in the House of Representatives this afternoon by Vics"Regal message, and read a first time. The Hon. A. M. Myers (Auckland East) asked whether it was' intended to transfer the Metropolitan Ground as the site, and if so, what sum was to be placed on the Estimates for the building. The Prime Minister said the land proposed to be transferred to the University College Council was that known as the Metropolitan Ground. It was not intended to interfere at a'l with the Government House. At least seven acres would be reserved for the Vice-Regal residence. The College Council was quite satisfied with this arrangement. In reply to the second portion of Mr. Myers' question, he said a substantia] sum would be placed on the Estimates for a building. The Bill is a. simple document of four clauses. After reciting that the land described in the schedu'e is part of the land set apart for the purposes of a Government House at Auckland, but is no longer • required for those purposes, and that- it j is desired to convert it into a site for a j college, the- Bill provides for the vesting 1 of the land in the College Council in trust | for that purpose. The council is required to erect a building for a college " to the satisfaction of the Minister for Education." All plans must be approved by the Minister. Unless the buildings are erected vithin 10 years the Governor-General may by proclamation resume possession of the land for the CrownThe area to be vested in the council by the Bill is three acres three roods.
