SOCIETY OF ACCOUNTANTS.

WORK OF THE LAST YEAR.

The annual meeting o£s the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Society of Accountants was he'd last evening in the society's loom, Wyndham Chambers. Mr. G. W. Hutchison presided over a good attendance.

The annual report, in referring to war time activities, stated that the society had contributed £2338 directly to patriotic funds, and in subscriptions remitted jf members on active service. It had iiso conducted a comprehensive scheme for the instruction in book-keeping of returned disabled soldiers, but as this'did not receive very hearty support from the returned men, the society reluctantly abandoned the scheme, after spending a considerable amount upon it. It had also invested £1000 in War Loan bonds, and individual members had audited free of charge the accounts of the various patriotic societies. The branch roll of honour showed of 54 members who had served in the war, three had been killed in j action, a considerable number had been wounded, and many had gained honourable distinctions. The report also referred to the fact that the society's examinations were being recognised in the various branches of the Public Service. A deputation of the council had pointed out to the Minister for Internal Affaire the necessity of legislation in reference u, the audit of all trust accounts. The Minister agreed to consult the Cabinet on the question, and also promised to further consider the question of the protection of the word "Accountant." The necessity of a better system of audit of Friendly Societies accounts was also urged. i The following committee was elected:—• Messrs. W. H. Hemingway, H. C. Tewsley, G. C. Gorrie, G. W.
