STRIKE IN BAKERIES.
ENGLISH BREAD SHORTAGE. 5000 MEN RESUME WOEK. A. and N.Z. LONDON. Aug. 7. A conference between the master bakers and the operatives failed to settle the dispute over nightwork, but the co-operative bakeries agreed to concede the demand that all baking be done in daylight. The 5000 men employed by these societies were then ordered to resume.
There is scarcly a loaf of bread in the Liverpool shops. The Lord Mayor convened an urgent meeting of trade unionists to arrange for a supply in co-operation with the food officials. Thousands are without bread in Ilford. Supplies at Wrexham were pooled and distributed at the Guildhall. Bread at Chester was conveyed to the Market Hall and sold to waiting women and children. Crowds at Blackpool fought for bread.
