CHRISTCEURCH, Wednesday.

Rumours have been in circulation among returned soldiers that the gratuity to be granted to them by the Government would be at the rate of Is per day, irrespective of rank, for the period of active service. Some men even were inclined to believe that the new scale was being paid out in Wellington, and they have been busy reckoning up what their share was to be. Brigadier-General Richardson was a.'ked to-day if the rumour had any foundation. He state*! that so far no decision had been arrived at regarding the matter, but he felt confident that the Government would do the fair thing for tho returned men. He and other officers of the Expeditionary Force had placed their own views on the question before the Minister, and lie felt confident that the soldiers would not be disappointed when the final pronouncement was made, which, no doubt, would be very soon.
