"JUST AS GOOD."

One of my hobbies, fortunately a money-saving one—is the finding of substitutes for things I warn to buy and can't afford. For instance, I always wanted little silver pin-trays and pin-cushions for my dressingtable, but somehow they never came my way. Then one day it occurred to me that I could make use of some silver napkin lings which were not needed. so I made a fat round velvet cushion stuffed with bran, and glued it into one ring, while 1 glued two others to little velvetcovered circles cf cardboard to serve as pin-trays. Then in the kitchen I was able to devise an almost incredible number of things "just as good," among them being large stoneware jam jars for stewing meat and fruit in the oven, as well as' for baking daintv sandwich loaves. Lids of cocoa and other tins make excellent biscuit cutters, and little round tins which had contained potted meat made dainty pattv-pans—of course after 1 had hammered down the rough edges. For flour and crumb dredgers I used round tins with holes pierced in the lid. These are easily made with a hammer i and nail. When I need an extra rolling- ! pin I use a long glass bottle, and, in fact, I tor pastry, it is superior to a wooden one, being cooler. | A large tongue kn, with holes pierced ; in the bottom, makes an excellent strainer , or steamer. j Old nail-Finishes do very well fur Mack- : inj; or blnek'ead, and discarded toothbrushes are splendid for cleaning silver or for getting the dust out ot fancy china. The wrong side of old kid gloves may bo used for polishing silver, brass or steel, and rosy inner-solos for boots can re cut from old fall haJUL I
