FIJI FLAG IN GERMANY.
SPECIAL PERMIT FOR DISPLAY. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] SUVA, April 18. One of tho romantic storiesi of the war concerns a silk Fiji flag, which was presented to a contingent of troops from the colony by the former Governor, Sir Bickham Sweet-Escott. The flag was j placed in the charge of Private Coleman ] Clearer. He had a waterproof bait made, i and in this carried the flag through two i years and a-half of fighting. He and his comrades were joined to the King's Royal Rifles. Through fire, mud, and wet Clcary : carried the flag until tho armistice was 'proclaimed. Among the first troops to enter Germany were tho King's Royal Rifles. An array order prohibited any regiment from flying a national flag, but a i special exemption was made in favour of , the silken flag, and the war-worn piece of i bunting was taken out of its case, and . i was the only national flag flown by the . army of occupation. Such was the honour given to the national flag of one of tho smallest and mast distant portions of the Empire.
