GERMAN ESCAPEES.

ONE MAN' RECAPTURED.

BELIEVED TO BE LEADER.

FIVE OTHERS STILL AT LARGE.

[BY TELEOP.APH.—DWN

WELLINGTON, Monday.

One of the six G-erman prisoners of war who escaped from Featherston camp on Wednesday was captured at nine o'clock on Saturday night at Maryborough, Constable Dick making the arrest.

The escapee who was thus caught was J. J. Slip, formerly of Auckland. He is 24 years of age, and as he was the only one of the six who could speak English fluently and without accent, he was regarded as the probable leader or scout of the party. His recapture, therefore, is looked upon as the more satisfactory, as there is good ground for believing that the other five cannot be far away.
