THE POLITICAL OUTLOOK

SESSION of PARLIAMENT.

PROBABLE IN JULY.

VIEWS OF HON. A. M. MYERS.

Discussing the question whether there will be a session of Parliament before the general election takes place, the Hon. Arthur Myers, Acting-Minister for Finance, stated yesterday that irrespective of general political questions, it was absolutely necessary to pass taxing legislation, as no land tax can be collected until the Tax Bill has been passed. He said, " Land tax is usually made payable about the first week in November each year, and if the usual date of payment is to be adhered to—and it is not seen how any alteration can be made—the Tax Bill should be passed not, later than the latter part of October, so as to enable an Order-Ui-Council to be prepared and issued before the date of payment " Mr. Myers added that there was also every probability of legislation being passed on the lines of the Expiring J>aws Continuance Act, 1918, which extends the operations of • certain enactments to August 31, 1919. " This aspect alone/' said the Minister, should remove any- doubts ' that may exist regarding the holding of a session, which will probably be called in July, when, it is anticipated, Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph Ward will have returned to New Zealand."
