FREIGHT REDUCTION.
GRADUAL CHANGE WANTED.
•rate cutting deprecated. A. and N.Z. LONDON. Mar. 31. Mr. Thorogood, secretary of the Australian Merchants' Association, interviewed, said that provided rates were reasonable, merchants would prefer a steady system of freights. The conference had maintained this up to the present, and offered all the tonnage required. The_ merchants were urging a reduction of the present high rates, and a decline was expected in the next few months. They would prefer a natural and gradual reduction, which would cause a minimum of interference. Any rate cutting would seriously damage Australian and New Zealand trade with the United Kingdom.
