ST. PATRICK'S DAY.
OBSERVANCE IN AUCKLAND, OUTDOOR RECREATION. Yesterday being St. Patrick's Day, a close holiday was observed by the banks, legal and insurance offices, and many Government Departments. There was little public demonstration, the usual St. Patrick's Day sports having been held on Saturday. A number of sporting fixtures were held. The regatta at Ngaruawahia attracted a large number of j visitors from the city. The Ohinemuri ' Jockey Club held its second day's racing at Paeroi. In Auckland itself a patriotic I tournament was held by the Auckland ! Croquet Association, and bowling and tennis tournaments were held by various ■ clubs. A cricket match between a Grammar School old boys' eleven and the schools' first eleven was played in tho I Domain. Last evening the Akarana Club held a swimming carnival at the Tepid Baths. Tho St. Patrick's Day concert in the Town Hall was very largely attended. A picnic organised partly as a means of celebrating St. Patrick's Day and partly as a means of raising money for the liquidation of the debt on the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, now being built at : Devonport, was held at Motntapu yester- ■ dav. Ferry steamers left the wharf at 9.15 a.m. and 1.15 p.m., and carried in | all about 1500 people to the favourite I picnic resort. During the day c> number ! of athletic events were decided, and comj petitions of various kinds were carried out. After a most enjoyable outing tho , picnickers returned to the city, reaching the wharf at about six o'clock.
