Favourable weather was experienced on Saturday last at P&eroa for the first day's racing in connection witn the annual fixture of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club. Mr. H. Poland, socrotary, had everything in order in his department, while Mr. A. W. Gordon, stipendiary steward, was present. A few inquiries wero held, but nothing serious resulted. The principal event, the Ohinemuri Cup, was won by Mr. J, Williamson's aged gelding. Royal Irißh, whose victory created a mild torprise, while the same stablo provided tLo winner of the principal sprint event, in Mossman. Over the business end Royal Chef made a determined effort. but Mossman won easily, with Ohinewairua and Lißh'nine in line tor third money. NOTES ON THE RACING. Neither Northland or Monoplo were sent out to contest tho hurdle event, tor which ! Mahzoltov was a slightly better favourite than Tenacious. The favourite fell before entering on the final round when her prospects looked bright, whale the superior .condition of Tenacious told against the others over the last half-mile, and Sao a mount experienced no real difficulty arriving home in front. . . . , There was not quite so much invested on Active in the Maiden Handicap as at To Aroha. but, nevertheless, the son of Boni- ■ form and Eflort finished up the actual favourite, Bridgie being the only other candidate to carry .spirited support: the rest i Si received hall-hearted attention. The winner. aiyu>, returned over half » century,

while no lees than seven' of the other competitors would have registered considerably more had they won. In fact, one of the atartora was returning close on four figures. Though Glenopal was the actual favourite for the Nethorton Welter, there was solid support for Rockfield, who looked remarkably well. The fact that Hyllus was ridden by J a hurdle horseman may have been responsible for the son of Hymettus beine poorly . supported; he was returning in the vicinity ] of half a century to his supporters. He never , really threatened to be dangerous, a. *i. Brown's name figured on the board as rus ' rider in. the first dace, but it was reported that Tutohon hod > be substituted owing to Brown not being able to procure sufficient l lead to make up the welter poundage ol , list 101b. Gray always had Rockfield in a handy position, and once the straight was . reached entered into a stirring contest with Don't, and gained the honours. . . With Queen Abbey and Arran missing from the Kar&ngahake Handicap, Philomel* was the elect for the five furlong sprint, but she was beaten into third place by Caballero and Shining Light. The latter was always in the picture and is evidently on the improve, and had Philomela not kept him at it continually in the early part, he may have defoated the challenge thrown out, by Caballero in the closing stages. Ring Lupin failed to show up. though Bellacity gained fourth honours. Philomela carried more than doubto as much as the second favourite, ilangamahoo and Uncle Ned both looked improved with their racing at Te Aroha, and they were supported in the ordor named lor mo Ohinomuri Cup, which ended in the surprise victory of Royal Irish, who was taken to the front about six furlongs from home, and kept there. The son of Soult, who returned over a-nuarter of a century to his supporters, was ridden by the promising Ellorslio lightweight, Hamilton, who only .recently came out of hospital, after suffering the offects of a fractured leg, received by a fall at Tauranga, Blue Cross finished gamely, and worried Mangamahoo out of second money just when matters looked somewhat bright for the favourite in the straight. The Komata Hack Handicap proved a good thin- for Escaped, who soon rushed to the front from barrier rise, and won handsomely, indicating further victorious deeds for the son of General Latour. It is said he had not been doing very much since le .Aroha, and therefore should be improved with mo Had it been generally known that Tenacious would take kindly to brush fences, the son of Gluten would have been a very warm favourite for the Paeroa Steeplechase, but The Channel was elected to the post of honour and he made a game bid for the honours, but fell at the last fence, after having chanced another badly in the middle stages, on which occasion Warner made a clever recovery., & Kae was content to ride Tenacious in behind the leader until the last fence, at which stage they were on terms. The Channel fell, leaving Tenacious to go on and score | a bloodless victory from the veteran Golden Glow, who tried to make a serious bid seven furlongs from home. Had the • Channel stood up the winner may still have won, for he was never being troubled by his rider up to that stage, and cleared the obstacles so attractively for a novice as to suggest that he will earn some distinction in a better claßs during the. winter. i When Grey Star did arrive homo in time for third money he was heartily, cheered. [ Warner suffered badly from bruises when ' The Channel fell with him. Though Ohinewoirua was elected favourite , for the St. Patrick's Handicap, there was : good support for Mossman, Royal Chef, • and Rekanni. The result was never really > in doubt, for Mossman always looked the ; winner once the field settled down and he : won comfortably from Royal Chef, who . finished on and defeated Ohinewairua and . Lightning for second honours. Mossman > won the same race last ye.
