GATHERING OF MAORIS.
COUNCIL'S OPPOSITION. DANGER OF INFLUENZA. HEALTH OFFICER TO REPORT. [bt telegraph.—own correspondent.] WELLINGTON, Friday. The Raglan County Council has asked the Minister for Public Health to veto i the l&ge Maori gathering proposed to bo held at Ngaruawahia next week. The council states that the ga'.her ng fg in> desirable, in view of the possibility of a recrudescence of the influenza epidemic. The Hon. Q. W. Russell stated to-day l;hat he had received the-suggestion from the Raglan Council. He had also received from the Ngaruawabia Twvn Board a strong recommendation that the Maori gathering should be allowed to proceed. He had suggested to the chief health officer to obtain an immediate report from the health officer at Auckland in connec tion with the proposal.
Opposition to allowing large numbers of natives to congregate at the Nganfawahia regatta on Monday was also voiced by the Hamilton Borough Council on Thursday, and it was resolved to urge the Minister for Public Health to prohibit the gathering in view of grave danger that existed, no matter wja.t precautions might be taken.
