HEAVY OVERSEAS MAILS.
RECORD FOR DOMINION. WORK OF AUCKLAND STAFF, The overseas mail landed at Auckland on Thursday from the Niagara, Makura and Manuka was the largest ever received in the Dominion, The combined mails consisted of 3700 bags, of which 1200 were for Auckland. It consisted chiefly of English, American and Expeditionary Force mails brought from Vancouver by the Makura, which carried 3200 bags. The Niagara, which left Vancouver two days after the Makura, had only 250 bags. The balance of the mails was from Australia, and consisted of 250 bags landed by the Manuka. The work of sorting and despatching the mail matter began at nine o'clock on Thursday morning, and was not finished until late last night, the officials at the Auckland Chief Post Office being called upon to work long hours to cope with the rush. Most of the Auckland portion of the correspondence was delivered in the city and suburbs on Thursday, the balance beinf? delivered yesterday morning. The only portion not yet newspaoers—will be sent out this morning. . The next English, American and Expeditionary Force mail for New Zealand is due at Wellington by the Moana from San Francisco about Saturday next.
