INTERMENT AT PARNELL.

REPRESENTATIVE ATTENDANCE. The funeral of Canon C. M. Nelson, who died.on Wednesday, took place yeiiterday i amid many signs of regret' and sympathy. I The interment was at St. Stephen's Cemetery, Parnell, where many of those associated with the early history of the Auckland City and Province are laid to rest. Tho first porttioa of the service was held at St. Paul's Church, Symonds Street, of which the doceased was incumbent for , nearly four decades. As befitting the ! respect and honour due to ono who had ' been a prominent minister in tho Anglican j Church, an educationist, and an enerI getic worker in social reform movements, there was a large congregation, representative of the public bodies and institutions with which Canon Nelson had been connected. _ There were also present many of the parishioners who were associated with, him during his early ministry in Auckland, and several representatives of other churches. The service was choral, and the opening portion was read bv the Rev. ,C. A. B. Watson, vicar of St. Paul's). Tho I special Psalms were read by the Rev. L. ' L. Brady, and the lesson by Archdeacon G. Mac Murray. Special prayers were said ;by tho Rev. W. E. Gillam, and the ■ Bishop of the Diocese, Dr. A. W. Averill, pronounced the Benediction. The service in the church was concluded with the playing of Chopin's '• Marche Fune'bre." The Rev. W. Beattie, in a brief etiloginm of Canon Nelson, said it was right and proper to remember one who had served , God and did good to his fellows. This was the record of the deceased. Canon Nelson had been a scholar of high renown, and h's brilliant intellectual attainments had been revealed in tho ffrace and dignity of his teaching. His wonderful sympathy , and tact had been well exemplified in his ; watchful care for the sick and needy. He was an authority on Church law, and was one of tho first compilers of the Digest of Canon Law. Personally, he was greatly respected and esteemed. He had always been ready to do a kindly act'on, there was no envy or malice in 'his heart, and he had been a loyal and intelligent son of the Church of England. The service at the m-aveside wm conducted by the Rev. W. H. Wilson, ono of the oldest frends of the deceased family. Bishop Averill said the concludW prayers. Members of a number of Free- . mason lodges followed the cortege to the j graveside. ) The.chief mourners were Mrs. Nelson, widow of the deceased, Mrs. E. H. B. M-'lsom and Mrs. R. M. Tolhuwt, dauphten, Mr. and Mrs. A. . J. L. Coatee and Miss Coates. The pnll-bcarere were Messrs. Hebron Nelson, eon of the doceased. Robert Coates. nephew, E. R. V. H. Howard, an old fr ; end, and Dr. E ' H. B. M'lsom. a son-in-law. Many old friends Were present at the ernveside.
