TRAMWAY FATALITY.
PONSONBY BOY KILLED.
RUNS IN FRONT OF CAR.
INSTANTANEOUS DEATH.
A fatal tramway accident occurred on College .Road, Ponsonby, at about 4.15 p.m. yesterday, the victim. being a six-year-old boy named Chfiriea William Coleman, who resided with his parents at 93, College Road.
It is stated that the boy was standing with his sister on the footpath on the 6ido of College Road opposite their parents' residence. The boy suddenly loft his sister and Tan across the road with the evident intention of going to his home. He ran behind a tramc&r, 152, which' was bound from the city to Herno Bay, and as ho passed on to the opposite line ho ran in front of. car-151, bound from Heme Bay to the city, and was knocked down and killed. Motorman Arthur Hall, driver of car 151, in his statement, says that as he was passing car 152 the boy suddenly appeared from behind the latter car and ran in front of the on-coming car. He was* knocked down and killed instantly. The body was caught in the life-guard, and after being carried for about six yards, was thrown clear of the car, being considerably mutilated. The motorman states tb>t when he first saw the boy the latter was only about two yards in. front of his car, and that he then had no chance of stopping the car in time to save the child. He immediately applied the brakes and brought the car to a standstill within about one car's length. Life was extinct when the body ■: was picked up. An inquest will be held to-day.
